The Cathedral of Siena
The Cathedral of Siena is remarkable both within and without. Its rich facade is decorated with beautiful sculptures by Giovanni Pisano, and the wealth of treasures inside make it a rich artistic feast for the senses
Among these are 59 etched and inlaid marble floor panels, to which many artists have contributed over the centuries, or the Piccolomini Library with frescoes by Pinturicchio.
In the Baptistry below is the baptismal font in marble by Jacopo della Quercia. It contains bronze plaques depicting the life of John the Baptist and several others, designed by Lorenzo Ghiberti and Donatello.
The Cathedral Museum contains original artworks from the interior and exterior of the cathedral. These include sacred works from 1300-1500, such as the masterpiece of Duccio, the fabled "Maesta". In the “Galleria delle statue” there are sculptures by Giovanni Pisano, Jacopo della Quercia and Donatello. A staircase leads to a view point on the facade of the "New Cathedral" with a view of Siena which is definitely not to be missed.
