Artisan Workshops in Oltrarno
The area on the left side of the river Arno is called Oltrano. There you can still breathe the air of past times. Many small traditional artisan workshops and young artists from all around the world are giving this quarter an unforgettable flair.
There are, for example, books still bound by traditional methods, paper made by hand, beads blown, and here the famous doors of the Baptistery were gold-plated after the Arno-flood of 1966. Many of the craftsmen and artists workers can be observed while working.
We stroll through the small winding streets, pass the impressive Palazzo Pitti, where the Medici family resided for about 200 years, and the Italian king for about 7 years. It is also possible to visit the church of Santa Maria del Carmine with the well-known frescoes by Masaccio, the church of Santo Spirito planned by Brunelleschi and the Church of Santa Felicita, with the famous paintings by Pontormo.
