Tour to Montepulciano
As we approach, we can see Montepulciano perched on a hill between the Orcia Valley and the Chiana Valley, at a height of around 600m.
The city is surrounded by a medieval city wall, within which is a series of lavish Renaissance palaces. These were built for the most powerful families of the city, who commissioned the most important architects of the time to design their mansions. During our tour we will also visit the Piazza Grande, site of the cathedral and town hall, and one of the most beautiful places in Tuscany.
The "Bravio delle Botti" passes alongside the piazza. This is the Palio of Montepulciano, where wine barrels are rolled through the narrow streets. The wine, the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, has made the town famous all over the world. We will of course make sure to have some tasting opportunities during the tour.
Finally, we’ll visit the church of the Madonna di San Biagio, just outside the walls. This was built in the 16th century in the High Renaissance style by Antonio di Sangallo. The central building of travertine stone is considered his masterpiece.
