Museums: Museo Civico

The Museo Civico is housed in the Palazzo Pubblico. The most famous room, the Sala della Pace, is completely decorated with frescoes by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, with famous scenes of "Good and Bad Government".

In the Sala del Mappamondo we find among other treasures the magnificent "Maesta" by Simone Martini, and works by Sodoma, Sano di Pietro and Vecchietta. There are also 19th centure frescoes, showing the first king of Italy in the Museum.

I recommend combining this visit with the "Get to know Siena" tour. A leisurely stroll around the most famous sights will give you an excellent insight into this remarkable city.

Tip: From here you can climb the 102 m high tower "Torre della Mangia" which provides, after a climb of 503 stairs, a fantastic view of the Piazza del Campo, Siena and the surrounding area.
