Excursions to the Chianti area
The Chianti area, which has a worldwide reputation for its wine production, covers about 900 sq km between Siena and Florence. Medieval villages, castles, churches, abbeys, monasteries, villas and cottages nestle in profusion among in the gentle hills between the river valleys of Arbia, Elsa, Pesa and Greve. These give rise to the charm and attraction of this landscape.
One of many possible routes starts from Castellina in Chianti, notable for its Etruscan graves. At the famous winery Fonterutoli in the nearby village of the same name we have the opportunity to taste one of the well-known "Chianti Classico" wines. Taking the renowned "white roads", passing tiny villages such as San Giusto alle Monache, we come to the Castello di Brolio, the famous castle of the Baron Ricasoli, who is supposed to have "invented" there the formula for Chianti wine.
After a short tasting we continue through this beautiful area with gently sloping hills, past Meleto and on to Gaiole in Chainti. Proceeding via Vertine to Radda in Chianti and Volpaia, we finish our tour back in Castellina in Chianti.
