Trip to Colle Val d‘Elsa
Colle Val d’Elsa is today famous for its production of high quality crystal. The city is divided into the Upper Town and Lower Town, with a long elevator (lift) inside the fortress which provides a spectacular connection between the two.
In the Lower Town we visit the church of Sant’Agostino and the Museum of Crystal, the latter being dedicated to providing information about the main local industry.
With the elevator we reach the magnificent viewpoint at the medieval castle of the Upper Town. Passing through the narrow cobbled streets, by small churches, 13th century houses with great towers (including the birthplace of Arnolfo di Cambio) and by steep stairs, we reach the Piazza Duomo with the Palazzo Pretorio (now the archaeological museum), the Cathedral of St. Albert and Martial, containing a reliquary of a Nail of the Cross, the Bishop's Palace (now the Museum Sacred Art) and the picturesque Via delle Volte.
At the magnificent Palazzo Campana we leave the citadel, passing beautiful 16th and 17th century palaces, to the monumental Porta Nova gate.
